A dream project of the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) to open a 16-bed frail care centre exclusively for women has finally been realized when the IMA Baytul-Nur Care Centre officially opens its doors in Sherwood, Durban, tomorrow.

The objective of the centre – situated at 22 Browns Avenue – is to provide a warm and caring environment for the frail and elderly run along Islamic lines.

The centre offers a wide range of services, with caregivers, nurses and staff, who are well-trained to provide home based and inpatient care.

Baytul Nur Frail Care Centre will provide 24-hour nursing care to the frail and elderly in a comfortable, safe and friendly environment for medium- and long-term stays.

The Centre is also equipped to deal with a number of issues faced by residents that include domestic violence, medical issues, marital and familial issues, substance abuse, trauma, etc.

According to an IMA spokesperson, experts are able to provide counselling, motivational, emotional and psychological support to both residents and their family members.

In addition to providing counselling, the centre will train volunteers, as well as community healthcare workers, social workers and healthcare professionals. Another service the centre will provide is training to family members, teaching them how to take care of specific needs of their loved ones.

The centre will be a home away from home for residents who will enjoy nutritional home-cooked meals and snacks.

The centre is safe and secure with electrical perimeter fencing, surveillance cameras, constant gate monitoring and perimeter patrolling.

How will the centre fund itself?

According to the IMA-SA, residents who can afford the monthly payments will contribute, however Zakaat-qualifying patients will be catered for from the Zakaat Fund. Other monies will come from donors including from trust funds.

“The project is an opportunity to earn sawab -e-jariya for themselves and their loved ones by contributing to this much needed facility,” the spokesperson said.
