By Imam A. Rashied Omar
As we come to the close of another academic year, many of our matriculants, college, and university students have already begun and embarked on their final examinations. Soon, they will be joined by other students across various primary and secondary schools. This period is often accompanied by stress, anxiety, intense effort and hard work for students. Yet, it is also a time of great opportunity— a chance to strive for excellence and to reap the rewards of their efforts throughout the year.
I would like to offer some advice for our students, their loving and supportive parents, families, and friends, and conclude with a special prayer, asking Allah, the Answerer of Prayers, to grant them success in their exams.
First and foremost, it is important for all of us to remember that Islam places great emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge. The very first revelation to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s everlasting peace and blessings be upon him) was the command “Iqra’ – Read!”—a divine command and directive to seek knowledge and enlightenment. Therefore, students should view their exams not merely as a test of what they have memorised, but as a vital step in their lifelong journey of seeking and acquiring beneficial knowledge.
To our students, as you prepare for your exams, I advise you to manage your time wisely. Set aside generous amounts of time for studying and thorough revision, but do not neglect your daily Salah (prayers). In fact, your Salah should be your greatest source of strength and tranquillity. Let this be a time to turn to Allah with sincere supplication, seeking ease, understanding, and success. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has also advised us as follows: “Seek help from Allah and do not feel helpless.” So, to our students, we say to strive diligently in your studies, but whenever you feel overwhelmed, remember to seek Allah’s assistance.
Additionally, I advise students to take care of their physical and mental well-being during this period. Eat healthily, ensure that you take adequate rest, and take breaks when needed. Our bodies and minds are blessings from Allah, and we must treat them with care. Remember, you are not alone in this journey; your parents, family, teachers, and community are all praying for your success. Your achievements are a shared joy for all of us.
To the supportive parents, family members and friends, I offer the following advice. In the coming weeks, students will need your encouragement, support, prayers, and guidance. More than anything else, your understanding will be crucial. Your role during this time is crucial, as your support can mean the difference between anxiety and calmness, despair and hope. Be patient with our students and create a conducive environment for studying, free from unnecessary distractions. Constantly remind them of their potential, encourage them to do their best, and assure them that you are proud of their efforts, regardless of the outcome.
Above all, make du’a and prayer for their success and well-being. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised that “the supplication of a parent for their child is accepted.” Our du’as and prayers can be a great source of Barakah (blessings) for our children as they prepare for and write their exams.
Finally, let us keep in mind that a student’s worth is not defined by exam results. Whether or not they achieve the grades they hope for, we have no doubt that they will rise to the challenge and give their best. Their success is not theirs alone; it belongs to their families, communities, and, indeed, the entire nation.
In conclusion, I urge everyone to pray for the success of our students during this exam season. The best du`a and prayer is the one recommended by Allah in Surah Taha Chapter 20, verse 114: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.” Students should recite this du’a and prayer along with the Bismillah before beginning every exam.
May Allah grant all our students success, ease their anxiety, strengthen their resolve, and reward their hard work. May Allah bless the parents and families for their unwavering support and make this time a source of unity and strength for our community.
