The Media Review Network (MRN) expresses its grave concern at the continued incarceration of Shaykh Ibrahim Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). Together with his wife they have been languishing in prison for almost 4 years.

At the time of their imprisonment they were badly injured and continue to be in poor health. They have been denied medical care by the Nigerian Prison authorities and their health continues to deteriorate.

In 2015 over 1000 members of the IMN were massacred by the police during a raid on the IMN headquarters, including three sons of the Shaykh.

Shaykh Zakzaky’s only “crime” was to call for the unity of Muslims and to urge the Nigerian regime not to kowtow to Zionist Israel. It was his intense support for the Palestinian cause and his increased popularity within the Nigerian community that alarmed the Nigerian Government, the military and Zionist Israel. The Government in Abuja is also close to the illegal Saudi regime in Riyadh. The marriage between Riyadh and Tel Aviv is no secret.

Shaykh Zakzaky has not faced any charges in court. It is obvious that he is being victimised for his honourable and righteous political position.

The MRN calls on our Government, through our Department of International Relations, to pressurise the African Union to prevail on the Nigerian Government, to either charge the Shaykh or release him and his family, immediately. It may be necessary to approach the relevant United Nations agency as well as the International Court of Justice for further recourse.
