The month of Ramadaan is upon us and as is required, each Muslim who is physically able to will be fasting with the aim of getting closer to and reconnecting with Allah. It is a month marked by heightened spirituality, generosity and an increased awareness of the plight of the poor and solidarity with their difficulties.
However, we must be mindful of the context within which we observe this Ramadaan. It is a context characterised by wars of aggression in Palestine and Ukraine and death and destruction in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan. These, together with rising far-right extremism in Europe and a belligerent regime in Washington, DC, are signs of an increasingly unstable world.
It is for the above reasons that we should tie the spiritual revival that comes with fasting and worshipping in Ramadaan to a revival and revitalization of activism aimed at creating a just and peaceful world. The Muslim Youth Movement (MYM) wishes all Muslims around the world a Ramadaan filled with mercy and blessings from Allah.
