Despite opposition from senior Ulama, Durban is set to host the biggest Mass Iftar the city has seen in years, with over 5000 people of all denominations expected to attend.
The Mass Iftar will take place on Friday (29 March) at Durban’s Kingsmead Cricket Stadium. The theme of the Iftar will also shine a spotlight on the Zionist genocide in Gaza. Attendees have been encouraged to bring along Palestinian flags and other regalia.
The inter-faith event is being sponsored by various Islamic NGOs. According to the organizers, the mass iftaar was about” showcasing the common humanity and diversity of our country and about building bridges toward a true rainbow nation.”
However, the event has run into controversy, with one member of the Ulama saying that the event was not permissible.
Huge pots of food will be prepared by Manjras catering, although attendees are welcome to bring their own Iftar treats and share them with others.
Asked by Al-Qalam whether hosting a mass Iftar was appropriate when thousands are starving in Gaza, Dr Shabier Omar, an organizer and noted Palestinian activist, said the focus of this event was not about food – it was about social cohesion and bridge-building among various communities of all faiths.
He said arrangements have been made to bus hundreds of people to the event. People of all faiths will be transported from areas such as Phoenix, Overport, Briardene, Redhill, KwaMashu and Inanda.
The formal programme will start at 4 pm, and speakers from various faith communities will address the crowd. The event will culminate with a talk from an Islamic perspective about Ramadhan.
The organizers pointed out that Salaah, purdah and wudhu facilities are available. While families may opt to sit together, there will be separate seating for males and females.
The programme will conclude just before Magrib Azaan with a final dua.
After maghrib salaah, meals will be served.
“We hope to conclude by 6.30 to allow for people who wish to leave to make it in time for esha salaah. For those willing to assist with cleaning up, your assistance is welcome. We will also read esha and taraweeh salaah at the stadium”, said a spokesperson.
