The Durban 48 Hour Film Project is set to take place from 10 to 12 October 2025 – it offers an important platform for young people, schools, and aspiring filmmakers to tell the stories of our time.
The Durban edition is part of a global movement that challenges participants to create a short film in just two days. Now in its 25th year, the initiative has grown into one of the world’s largest and most accessible film competitions. For Durban, it is more than just an event – it is a way of showcasing local creativity, encouraging collaboration, and nurturing voices that may otherwise go unheard.
The winning film from the Durban chapter will represent the region internationally, competing against 139 other winning films from across the globe.
Workshops will be held on October 6 -7 at the Natal Command site, which is also the proposed location for the new Video Vision film studios. These workshops will feature celebrated producers, directors, and writers who will guide participants in key areas of filmmaking. The training is designed to empower young people and first-time filmmakers, equipping them with the skills and confidence to tell meaningful stories.
City Producer Nerusha Maharaj said: “Our vision is to nurture the next generation of filmmakers, encouraging young people to become creators rather than consumers of content. We want to see film used as a catalyst for positive change, giving our communities a stronger voice in shaping their own narratives.”
