Ingredients
6 slices of bread (day-old works best)
2½ cups milk
4 eggs
¾ cup sugar
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon or cardamom powder
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
½ cup chopped dates, raisins, or chocolate chips
¼ cup chopped nuts (almonds, pecans, or cashews)
2 tablespoons desiccated coconut (optional)
Method
Preheat the oven to 180 °C and grease an oven-proof dish.
Tear the bread into small pieces and place them in the dish. Drizzle with melted butter.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla essence.
Pour the mixture evenly over the bread and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
Scatter the chopped nuts, coconut, and dates or raisins over the top.
Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until golden brown and firm to the touch.
Serve warm — with custard, cream, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
