Last week, during the #Week4Palestine press conference, a significant event unfolded not only in the global campaign for justice but also within South Africa’s political arena.

With the upcoming elections on the 29th of May 2024, it was affirmed that the issue of Palestine stands as one of the most significant topics, with South African voters demanding unequivocal solidarity from their leaders.

In a remarkable display of unity, the ANC joined 12 other political parties, setting aside our differences to pledge support for Palestine. The pledge draws a clear line in the sand, providing clarity to South Africans on where each party stands on this crucial issue.

It is evident that the parties who have not signed the pledge are unable to stand with Palestine, in this regard we are concerned that the DA as the governing party in the Western Cape, has failed to endorse the #Week4Palestine and sign the pledge.

We also remain concerned that the City of Cape Town, under the DA government, remains in a twinning arrangement with the Israeli City of Haifa, offering further insult to our people. Residents of the Western Cape are cautioned against voting for parties such as the DA and the PA who have not only failed to pledge solidarity to Palestine but support Israeli apartheid war crimes.

The gains achieved by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) must not be jeopardized, and any party unable to commit to this cause cannot be trusted with our nation’s international relations policy.
