The Honda CRV is a long-time favourite in SA, and it’s available in 150 countries –staggering indeed. Compared to the four previous versions, this one is bigger and more refined.
In South Africa there has been a significant increase in demand for SUVs and the competition is tough. The Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4 are serious competitors while the VW Tiguan and Renault Kadjar are worthy competitors too.
This new CRV is fresh and instantly eye catching. It has unique curves, chrome finishes, and eye-catching lights. The inside looks anything but cheap, the infotainment system is impressive and it stands out generally. Power is somewhat lacking at the lower end with the 2.0 engine having 113 kW and 189 Nm of torque.
The Executive and Exclusive versions have a new 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine with offering 140 kW and 240 Nm of torque.
The interior is stylish and spacious; it creates a cool and comfortable environment in the CR-V. Features include a full-colour, 5-inch touchscreen display which offers Bluetooth, music functionality and hands-free telephony. In the more expensive derivatives one gets a panoramic sunroof, automatic levelling headlights, and keyless smart entry.
One needs to note that the CRVs have the following:
• 6 airbags,
• Driver Attention Monitor
• ISOfix child seat mounting points.
• ABS with EBD,
• Agile Handling Assist (AHA),
• Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA),
• Hill Start Assist (HSA),
Even though some reviewers may have described the CRV as boring it is a solid, greatly engineered, practical vehicle. It may lack the excitement but it handles with precision.
This new vehicle is vastly different from the previous ones but it enters it a very competitive and tough market with competitors to be reckoned with.
